Seattle Dance Dance!

Freeform Dance Dance is a Saturday morning dance in Seattle open to everyone! We dance freestyle, similar to ecstatic dance. We love to move it move it! Every body welcome including children (must be accompanied by a caregiver)! Kids 12 and under are sliding scale $0 – $10.

This kind of freeform dance is also known by some as movement medicine,  Sweat Your Prayers, Dance Church, the Five Rhythms or somatic therapeutic movement. Whatever you call it….it’s dancing. An ancient human expression in being alive.

We are a welcoming, fun community of folks ages 1-101. We are LGBTQ+ friendly.

No steps, no instruction, no choreography. This is a joyful time to move the body to a huge variety of music, get fit, and get happy.

You can also join us on ZOOM (we love our friends dancing with us in France, London, New York or South Africa).

Every SATURDAY 10:15 am – Noon Pacific Time (80 minute set list of music). Join our mailing list for updates and important announcements.

LOCATION:  Northgate Community Center South Dance Hall (gorgeous!)
10510 – 5th Avenue NE, Seattle, WA 98125

COST: $10 – $25 sliding scale per person, children 12 and under $5-10. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cash, check, venmo, paypal. (No credit cards).

Park in the Northgate Library Parking lot and follow our signs. If lot is full (very rare) then park right across the street in the ample Northgate Mall parking lot. Inside there are big bathrooms, but no showers. Filtered water. Shoes OK to wear.

Our music is rich, varied, playful and joyful. The set list, the venue and the people make the dance shine!

This is an experience of moving spontaneously and soulfully, with passion, just the way you need and want to. YOUR WAY!

We have yoga mats, yoga blocks, jump ropes, scarves, hoola hoops, shakers.

Our music is from all continents. We begin slowly and build up to fast-paced inspiration at the peak. Often, we have music from every era since the 1950s, and music form all over the world including Africa, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Asia, Ireland. Drum beats, native music, indigenous music, the music of various cultures. We try it out, we feel what their beat, their energy, their dancing playfulness embodies!

If you feel shy, come try it. There is nothing required. We support each other without words, on the dance floor, in being exactly how we each are. This is living spontaneity, a place to be without speaking, without plans.

If you’ve been to ecstatic dance in any city, you’ll recognize some similarities with the freeform style of dancing any way you wish. Our Dance Dance in Seattle is very family friendly, brightly lit with natural gigantic windows opening into huge trees. People say over and over again how much they appreciate the environment and the morning hour for starting the weekend out just right.

    1. Hi Pati! We meet most Saturdays at 10:15 am. Doors open 10 am, music starts 10:15-ish. We dance until 11:45, have a short closing circle, and out by noon. It’s helpful to check facebook or get on our mailing list just in case we are not dancing (rare, but sometimes happens). Hope to see you soon–it’s honestly the highlight of our entire week and we always have about 20-40 people and growing. –Grace

      1. Jon-I would like to share my passion with other dancers re: a fun contest to reduce household carbon use in Seattle: “Help Pump Up Seattle for Carbon Reduction”: You can participate in Taming Bigfoot Seattle’s fun Household Carbon Reduction contest and help pump up Seattle for reducing our Greenhouse Gas emissions as a city! Apply yourself, or with others, to form a team of 7. Applications are being accepted until 12/31/17. An orientation for contestants will take place at Seattle Unity 1/21/18. The contest will run February through April with February being the base month. Details at tamingbigfootseattle.org.

        1. Thankyou for sharing this, John! Love that you’re involved in such a great project–excellent intention and contest. (Facilitator Grace here). –Grace

          1. Wonderful! We still have it highly in mind and getting closer to starting dance on Tuesdays!

          2. Jon Elizondo aka DJ-Zondo of F2D2 will be offering a new dance on the 4th Wednesday evening of every month at a new location: The Russian Community Center on Capitol Hill. This will not be what is now the F2D2 unique style of very eclectic and upbeat music including popular and familiar tunes from all ages, but will still be a freestyle dance in the ecstatic dance style format. The dance is called The Five Elements. Come try this new dance experience. We hope you might try it! It is part of the Bliss Dance run by the Happiness Collective non-profit, and there will be a different standing DJ every Wednesday night. DJ-Zondo of F2D2 will be the 4th Wednesday, with the first premier debut dance being February 28th, 2024. Doors open 7pm, set list begins 7:30pm. Find out more information at http://www.blissdanceseattle.org

      1. Right now all our Dances are at Northgate Community Center 10510 – 5th Avenue NE, 98125. In the gorgeous south dance hall.

        1. I am soooo excited to find you today! You are near my and I need to dance. Yipee Can’t wait to join you in dance.

          1. HOORAY! Delighted you’ll be joining us. We always have a fantastic time and thrilled to welcome anyone who wants to dance, like you! See you soon!

    2. Pati, we JUST saw your email asking about our schedule….how crazy is that? We had a website glitch going for awhile, but it’s fixed. We dance almost always on Saturday mornings 10:00 Doors Open and 10:20 music begins. Northgate Community Center. Write any time if you have more questions.

      1. Yes! We have so much fun! Hope you can join us sometime. 🙂 We are dancing every Saturday in December including 12/24 and 12/31. Warmest, Facilitator Grace

    3. Are you on for this weekend? Please let me know as I am coordinating a group to attend. Thanks for your help!

      1. Hello Ann! Yes we are dancing on Saturday morning for sure!! 10 am doors open, music begins 10:20. If you want to get on the email mailing list, this may help–we always send out the announcement of the upcoming dance, and it’s the key way to know if for any reason we are NOT dancing (very rare actually). The only reason we don’t have a dance going is if the community center dance hall we rent is occupied by an important event (like a wedding, or a huge city-wide meeting). Otherwise, we’re there 90% of the time! Write to jonzondo@juno.com directly if you’d love to add your name to the Freeform Dance Dance announcements list. And see you on Saturday! –Warmest, Grace and Jon

  1. Hi Grace and John–This is George Howland, I’ve been coming to the dance for around a month. If you don’t know me by name, I led the singing of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” last week. I have an off-line question for you, please contact me at georgehowland@gmail.com or 206-784-2957. Thanks!

    1. Yay George! Totally know who you are! 🙂 We’ll definitely email/call today sometime (might be later this evening after work day). Much love, Grace

  2. Are you still dancing? I see the comments end in January of this year. Also, can we bring our own props like veils or fans?

    1. Yes yes! We dance every Saturday morning–Love to have props there (we have quite a few to play with and sometimes people even bring hoola hoops). We wound up getting more involved in activity on facebook than over here, but very much appreciate your note–I’ll make sure it looks clear we’re still dancing. Hope to see you soon on the dance floor! Maybe this coming Saturday, the first Saturday of May?! Warmest, Grace

  3. Hope to get there eventually; it sounds lovely. Have really enjoyed the Sunday Ecstatic dance on 15th E, which is much closer for me.

    1. Sorry for the delay in getting you on our list! Doing it today. We mail usually only once a week. You can also find out events on Facebook at freeformdancedance which is our FB page!

  4. Love that I found this site – will see you next Saturday – and happy you reach out to list if not happening (I’ve asked to subscribe.) See you there!

    1. So glad you found us! And good, also, you’re getting on the email list. We’ve got every Saturday in October and November set to go for sure. It’s rare we are not at our Northgate Community Center on Saturday mornings, but rarely it does happen. Looking forward to dancing with you!–Grace and Jon

    1. Great, we would love to have you! Just come on over to the dance hall on any Saturday morning: 10510 – 5th Avenue NE, Seattle, 98125. We’ll be there setting up (doors open at 10 am). Music begins around 10:20 am. 75-80 minutes of music, it’s a wonderful time. Any abilities are welcome!!

    1. Hi Sonia! Love to have you dancing with us! We will put you on our mailing list, but just so you know–we’re scheduled to be there at Northgate Community Center every Saturday through all of October and November. How old is your daughter? All ages are welcome and we frequently have several young ones, either grandchildren or children of dancers. Thanks for writing and hope to see you soon!–Grace

  5. Hello, I just learned about you and wondered if you will be meeting this Saturday, November 17, 2018 and/or next Saturday, November 24 ? These are the weekends before and after Thanksgiving so wanted to check… thanks!

    1. Yes indeed! Sometimes the Saturdays nearest the holidays are the most fun. But yes, as long as the Community Center is open, we’re there! If you’d like to be on our mailing list where we send an email each week with the schedule, let me know. Every so often there isn’t a dance dance, but 99% of the time we’re right there on Saturday mornings. Looking forward to having you!–Facilitator Grace

      1. Great! Thanks Grace for your reply back. I checked the box “subscribe me to your mailing list and also “notify me of new posts by email”. I didn’t get an email notification of your reply. I just came back to see if you had replied and thankfully you did. Hope to be there either tomorrow or next Saturday. Thanks!

        1. OK, Laurie–and good to know you didn’t get a reply in your inbox. We’ll add you to our Constant Contact mailing list. We only send out emails announcing our dances. Thank you! Look forward to dancing with you!–Grace

  6. Hi I am sensitive to loud things including music. I prefer it to be soft in the backgroud. ALso my thinking is impaired bc of brain damage, especially if there is high volume. Can u turn it down?

    1. No, we have volume at normal levels at our dance and the music played is key and in the foreground, it is not background music. Sounds like yoga or some other kind of modality would be best for you. Good luck in finding what works.

    1. You are so right–some of the basic info was unclear or slightly hidden. Thanks for the heads up! WOW! (We’re goofy). Dance dance is every Saturday, and it’s sliding scale $10-$15 per adult. Hope to see you on the dance dance floor. –Grace and Jon

  7. Hello,

Can you tell me if there are any other days of the week (than Sats) that you’re presently having your dance jams?

    Thanks so much.

    1. We have no restrictions or requirements as of today (and sorry for the very long delay on seeing your comment and getting back to you!) We’ve been so focused on facebook we got side-tracked with our normal website, LOL. Althought this site explains the details much better for our dance. 🙂 We’ve been having a ball every Saturday and love if you’d join us!–Grace, Facilitator

  8. Hi everyone, we are loving dance every Saturday and welcome you all. Usually about 50 people in attendance each week at this time (spring 2023).
